Martin Luther King, Jr. (1929-1968) was an American civil rights leader who was essential in the struggle for racial equality in the United States. He is best remembered for his campaigns for equal rights for African Americans, including his famous "I Have a Dream" speech. King advocated for peaceful protests and nonviolent civil disobedience to achieve social justice. He was a highly influential leader in the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s.

King was born in Atlanta, Georgia, on January 15, 1929. He was an influential figure in the Baptist church and was strongly influenced by the teachings of Christianity and the Social Gospel. He became a minister at the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama, in 1954. In 1955, he helped to organize the Montgomery Bus Boycott, a protest against segregation in the city's public transit system. The boycott was a success, and the Supreme Court ruled in 1956 that segregation on public transportation was unconstitutional.

King was a leader of the civil rights movement throughout the 1950s and 1960s. He organized and led the March on Washington in 1963, where he delivered his famous "I Have a Dream" speech. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964
