Frederick Douglass was an African-American social reformer, abolitionist, orator, writer, and statesman.
Born into slavery in Maryland in 1818, he escaped to Massachusetts in 1838. He became a national leader of the abolitionist movement in Massachusetts and New York, gaining note for his dazzling oratory and incisive antislavery writings. In his time, abolitionists described him as a living counter-example to slaveholders' arguments that enslaved people lacked the intellectual capacity to function as independent American citizens.

Douglass wrote three autobiographies, in which he wrote eloquently about the brutalities of slavery, his many struggles to attain a sense of self, and his long fight to gain freedom. Douglass was a powerful advocate of the abolition of slavery, urging the nation to fulfill its promise of liberty and equality for all.

He was a firm believer in the equality of all people, and his tireless efforts helped to end slavery in the United States. He also advocated for women's rights, suffrage, and equal rights for African Americans. After the Civil War, Douglass was appointed the U.S. Minister to Haiti and later served as the District of Columbia's Recorder of Deeds.
